The Copa MX is a soccer competition between Mexican clubs. These teams belong to both, the top flight and the second Mexican soccer division. The reigning Copa MX champion is Club America. This tournament is divided into two phases: the group phase and the final phase. In the group phase, clubs are assigned to 9 groups of 3 teams each. In each group, they will play each other in round trip matches. The leaders of each group, plus the seven best second clubs will advance to the final phase. This latter is made up of the following stages: round of 16, the quarterfinals, the semifinal, and the final. These stages will also be played in round trip matches.
When Mexican soccer stopped due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Copa MX finalist teams were already known. These are the Rayados de Monterrey and the Xolos de Tijuana. The group round took place between July and November 2019. In this round, the teams Monterrey, Toluca, and Morelia stood out. Each of them won all the matches they played in their respective group.
On the contrary, teams like Universidad de Guadalajara and CF Atlante fell defeated in each of their commitments. Monterrey led group 2, which they shared with Cafetaleros de Chiapas and Universidad de Guadalajara. He had 12 goals in favor and just 3 against, mainly due to a 6-0 win against Cafetaleros on the group's final date. For its part, Tijuana was the group 5 leader with a 3-0-1 record, with 9 goals for and 5 against.
In the round of sixteen, Monterrey left Celaya behind when they won the return match by 3-0. Tijuana beat Atlético San Luis by winning both games with a score of 0-1 and 1-0. The series Dorados-Guadalajara, Toluca-Atlas, and Morelia-Cafetaleros ended in penalties shoots during the second leg. Dorados, Toluca, and Morelia finally advanced to the next stage. Santos Laguna, Juárez, and Pachuca would complete the 8 classified to the next scene. In the quarterfinals, Monterrey beat Santos Laguna. This was a closed series defined 1-0 in the return match in favor of Rayados. For its part, Tijuana beat Morelia 3-1 at home in the first leg. That was enough to win the series. Toluca and Juárez won with relative ease the return matches, going to the semifinals.
Tijuana maintained its excellent performance at home in the semifinal series' first leg against Toluca. They won by 3-0. Then, in a contested second leg, they won again 4-3. Meanwhile, Monterrey lived a series with a dramatic ending against Juarez. He lost as a visitor 2-0 and then won in the second leg with the same score. Monterrey resolved the series in its favor in the penalties shoots.
Additionally, it is essential to note that there are scored 216 goals until now in this cup. This means an average of 2.35 per match. The scorer leader is the Dutch player from Monterrey, Vincent Janssen. He achieved 5 goals in only 225 minutes of action. Now, all that remains is to wait for Mexican football to resume to enjoy the Copa MX 2020 grand finale.
