El FC Basel is one of the most traditional clubs among those participating in the Swiss Super League. This club has a distinguished history in the Swiss football top category. Despite this, it took this club four decades to achieve its first title. This was the 1933 Swiss Cup against its archrival, the Grasshopper Club Zürich. Currently, the club participates in its 25th successive campaign in the first Swiss Football Division. They have the biggest arena and one of the largest fan communities in Switzerland. In the following, we will review the FC Basel performance in the current Swiss Super League.
The Swiss league season began on the last 19–21 July 2019. As in all seasons, this team's main objective is to win the Swiss Super League championship. When the competition stopped due to the Covid-19 expansion, the team was in the third position of the standing. Their record was 12-4-7 with 48 goals for and 24 goals against and 40 points accumulated. They are in the last spot that gives access to the Champions League qualifier rounds. If we analyze the 2019-2020 Basel's season in the domestic league, we can split it into two parts.
The first one comprehends the first 11 matches of the schedule. The team had an outstanding performance being undefeated in 10 of those 11 games. They won 8, draw 2, and lose only 1. In this period, they crushed their rivals, registering 2.45 goals for and only 0.82 goals against per match. Considering all competitions, they were undefeated during 12 matches until October 24, 2019. After that, they lost to the FC Zurich 3-2 on October 27, 2019. This match marked the beginning of a very different path for FC Basel. Since then, the team had a record of 4-2-6. The number of goals scored decreased to 1.75 per match, and the goals conceded increased to 1.25 per game.
In this period, they suffered significant losses before rivals in the league title fight: Servette, Young Boys, and St. Gallen. Moreover, 5 of their 6 losses were against clubs trying to reach European competitions' spots. Outstanding Basel players this season are Kemal Ademi, Kevin Bua, Fabian Frei, and Jonas Omlin. Forward Ademi is the team's leading scorer with 8 goals. Meanwhile, midfielders Bua and Frei accumulate 11 goals and 9 assists between them. This has stimulated the club's offense. For his part, goalkeeper Jonas Omlin has participated in 22 of the team's 23 matches in the league. He is the leader in clean sheets with 8, tied with 3 other goalkeepers. Thanks to him, FC Basel is the second-best team in save percentages and goals against every 90 minutes.
Swiss authorities recently informed that national competitions could restart since June 8. Once football resumes in Switzerland, FC Basel will play 13 matches until the campaign ends. In these 13 games, the club will have to fight for recuperating its best form and win the title. They must achieve the highest amount of points at home. Likewise, they will have two away consecutive key matches against hard-to-beat opponents. These are Servette and St. Gallen.
These critical encounters could decide the destiny of the FC Basel in the 2019-2020 Swiss Super League.
