Jurgen Klopp has established himself as one of the Liverpool greats with the incredible feats he had achieved at Anfield over the past five years. He was the man who restored the club's European elite status. On top of that, he delivered the first league trophy in 30 years. After winning the elusive Premier League title, the 20/21 season presents a newer challenge in front of the former Borussia Dortmund manager. Can he defend the title and become the first Liverpool manager to do so since Kenny Dalglish in 1987? That will be far from an easy task. Rival teams have strengthened in the summer transfer window. Besides, the pandemic restricted the club's spending capacity, and they lost a handful of key players to long-term injuries. But, Jurgen Klopp was still able to make some good signing to bolster the squad. After missing his initial target Timo Werner, who went to Chelsea, Liverpool brought in Diego Jota from Wolverhampton. They paid a hefty fee of £41 million, which raised quite many eyebrows. But, Jota repaid the faith put on him as he scored nine goals in 17 matches for Liverpool after sustaining an injury. The midfielder also performed well before going out injured. Thiago Alcantara was Klopp's other summer recruit, who arrived for £30 million from Bayern Munich.
Coping with injuries seems to be the main challenge Jurgen Klopp needs to overcome now. As of December 30, seven first-team members were unavailable due to injuries, including Virgil Van Dijk, Joel Matip, and Joe Gomez. The injuries did take their toll on Liverpool's performances. They have only managed to keep only four clean sheets in their first 15 Premier League games. They also suffered a humiliating 7-2 defeat at the hand of Aston Villa. Despite all that, Liverpool managed to stay atop the Premier League table after playing 15 matches. Manchester City, whose closest competition for the Premier League title in recent seasons, lags six points behind and occupies the 8th position on the table. But, there is barely any room to be complacent. Archrivals Manchester United has closed the gap significantly despite a shaky start to their campaign. Ole Gunnar Solksjaer's men trailed Liverpool by only two points after 15 matches.
Jurgen Klopp's impeccable man-management and adaptability skills make Liverpool fans hopeful of retaining the title despite all these obstacles. Youngsters like Rhys Williams and Curtis Jones have performed like seasoned professionals when asked to prioritize senior players. The likes of Fabinho seem natural to play makeshift positions. He has been playing as a center back as injuries continued to pile up for the defending champions. The attacking trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino are also firing on all cylinders. Jurgen Klopp, who received the Best FIFA Men's Coach Award this December, continues to outsmart the opposition with his dynamic style of play. His incredible ability to draw out the best of his players makes Liverpool a favorite for domestic and European glory.
