Every season, the Pichichi Trophy is awarded to the highest goal scorer. Over the past decade, the winner's list has been dominated by the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. With the latter’s move to Juventus, how does that change the odds?
As La Liga's all-time top goal scorer, it comes as no surprise that the Argentinian international would be the top contender for the Golden Boot. In 2011- 12, Lionel Messi scored a whopping 50 goals in just 37 appearances and did not fail to impress during his following seasons. Last La Liga, Lionel Messi 34 goals in 36 league matches. Having won the Pichichi twice simultaneously, he could definitely snatch the trophy again for the third time in a row this season.
Luis Suarez is a strong contender for the boot. In 2015 – 16, Suarez finished was the top scorer with a total of 40 goals, becoming the first player other than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to be awarded the Pichichi since 2009. The Uruguayan’s form, however, has dipped since then, unfortunately, with 29 goals in 35 appearances, and 25 goals in 35 appearances in his last two seasons, giving Lionel Messi, his fellow Barcelona teammate the upper hand this time around.
Bale is a likely Pichichi front-runner this La Liga. The Welshman faces more pressure following Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from Madrid, but that also increases his chances of being a top scorer. The winger even made it onto the Ballon d'Or nominee list this time around. With 16 goals in 26 league matches last season, Bale could certainly come up on top.
The Portuguese striker has had a phenomenal start to this season. Silva may be new to the Spanish football scene, but he has had no difficulty in settling right in, with a hattrick right off the bat with his debut against Rayo Vallecano. In just 8 games, he has scored 7 goals. AC Milan might not have worked out for the 22-year-old, but if he keeps this up, he could definitely give other contenders a run for their money.
Antoine Griezmann is without a doubt an incredibly talented striker. His last few seasons have been commendable with 22, 22, 16 and 19 goals in his last 4. Atletico Madrid is on the top of a number of bookmaker’s lists to win the tournament, and the Frenchman will likely play a large part to any success they may enjoy this season.
